Wedding Ceremonies in Italy

Civil, Religious, Symbolic or Elopement

In Italy, you can have a valid civil wedding, a religious wedding, a symbolic ceremony or even a simple blessing or elopement. For legally recognized weddings, you must present documents to the local authorities. The paperwork will vary depending on the nationality of the bride and groom and the type of ceremony requested. Our staff can assist you in preparing all the required documents. See Legal Aspects for laws on getting married in Italy.

Civil Wedding Ceremonies

Ceremonies with civil validity may be celebrated at the City Halls of every Italian town. We have extensive experience in civil weddings. We think that The ceremony at the Town Hall of Cortona is the perfect location for a wedding, Cortona is an extremely ancient city and the main square and entire historic district look exactly as they did in the Middle Ages.
The Town Hall was built in the thirteenth century and is exquisitely frescoed, making it one of the loveliest town halls in Tuscany. The Municipality of Cortona organizes beautiful weddings conducted at a leisurely pace, unlike other important town halls. Your wedding will be the only one celebrated on the day you’ve chosen and the hall will be at your disposal also after the ceremony for photographs.
The mayor or a Borough Council Clerk will celebrate the wedding, and after the ceremony he kindly offers 7 red roses to the bride and Italian spumante to guests.
We are extremely impressed with how the ceremony is conducted here, and this is why we suggest the city of Cortona as the location for the ceremony. In addition, it is very close to our Villa.

Religious Wedding Ceremonies

Foreign citizens can be married in Italy according to the Catholic rites. In this case, the ceremony must take place in a Catholic Church.

We are convinced that the Cathedral of Cortona is the perfect location for a religious Roman Catholic wedding, and the religious ceremony here is lovely. You can find photos of the exterior and interior of the church in the photo gallery. The church is 155 feet (47 m) long and 59 feet (18 m) wide. The nave rises to a height of 52 feet (16 m) and the aisles are 36 feet (11 m) high. Two rows of monolithic columns in dark grey stone support the arches bearing the central walls of the nave. The columns and arches divide the church into six bays. A series of windows along the two walls above the arches, between the upper part of the cornice and the trussed wooden ceiling, once illuminated the interior of the church. The layout of the church is reminiscent of the work of Brunelleschi. The local parish priest is very warm and friendly. He willingly assists foreigners with their wedding plans, and is proud to take part in this event. We are very enthusiastic about how the ceremony is conducted here, and this is why we suggest the city of Cortona as the location for the ceremony. Cortona is also very close to our Villa.

We can also arrange weddings according to Protestant Rite. In this case, it is possible to be married at our Villa San Crispolto, inside or outside the deconsecrated thirteen-century chapel with frescoes.

Symbolic Wedding

A symbolic wedding essentially consists of a blessing or a symbolic ceremony. You can celebrate this in a chapel or at any other location, without limitations or restrictions. Usually the couples who choose this type of ceremony have had a civil ceremony in their home country, and arrive in Italy for a wedding according to Italian tradition, at historic sites or in a private setting.
