Paperwork Requirements For Australian Citizens Planning a Wedding in Italy
In order to get married in Italy, Australian citizens must prepare a "NULLA OSTA" (certificate of No Impediment). To obtain this document you must provide the following documents, which must then be forwarded to the Australian Embassy in Rome or the Australian Consulate-General in Milan:
- the completed and signed "Application for a certificate of non-impediment" form
This document can be obtained from any branch of Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Australia or from an Australian diplomatic mission overseas.
- A certified photocopy of the front page of your passport.
- Full birth certificate + translation into Italian
- No Result of Search certificate (or Status Single certificate) + translation into Italian
This document is issued by the Registry of Birth, Death and Marriages in Australia
- A decree absolute if either party is divorced (in addition to the No Result Research certificate) + translation into Italian
These documents must be presented to the Australian Embassy in Rome or to the General Consulate in Milan. A Certificate of No Impediment will be issued immediately.
Once this document has been issued, it must be taken to the prefecture in Rome or Milan for authenticatation of the signature of the Consular Officer.
IMPORTANT: Women whose previous marriage was terminated within the last 300 days must obtain a waiver from the Procura della Repubblica (Court). This is issued on medical evidence that she is not pregnant.
